Velvet sand (polymer sand) is a decorative material for nail design that creates a soft, pleasant-to-the-touch textured surface, similar to velvet or suede. Its particles are very fine and lightweight, and after application they form a delicate matte finish with a dimensional texture.
Features of velvet (polymer) sand:
made of polymer micro-particles that do not dissolve in the material;
resistant to wear and does not change color;
does not shed when properly fixed;
gives the design an original, warm and cozy look.
How it is used in nail design:
Textured patterns — the sand is applied onto gel or gel polish designs before curing, creating a raised velvet effect.
Full nail coverage — for a “knitted sweater,” “plush manicure,” or soft-touch effect.
Combination with gloss or shimmer — the contrast of textures looks especially striking in festive designs.
Minimalist accents — applied on one or two nails as a matte detail or design accent.
Looks best in the following designs:
winter and festive “knitted” styles;
floral designs, lace, ornaments;
pastel or powder shades for soft everyday manicures;
black or burgundy velvet for a luxurious evening look.
Velvet (Polymer) Sand Application Technique
To ensure the velvet sand looks even, does not shed, and creates a truly soft and neat effect, it is important to follow the correct application steps.
1. Nail preparation
Perform standard nail preparation: shape the nails, push back the cuticles, and cleanse/degrease the nail plate.
Apply base coat and color, then cure in a lamp.
2. Applying the layer or design
Option 1 — Full coverage:
Apply a no-wipe top coat (or gel polish if volume is desired).
While the material is still wet, generously sprinkle velvet sand over the nail.
Gently remove excess (using a soft brush if needed).
Cure in a lamp for 60–90 seconds.
Option 2 — Design:
Draw the design (lines, lace, ornaments) using gel or gel polish.
Do not cure.
Sprinkle velvet sand over the design.
Shake off excess and cure in a lamp for 60–90 seconds.
3. Finishing
After curing, gently remove remaining sand with a soft brush.
Do not apply top coat — otherwise the velvet texture will be lost.
Tips for perfect results:
Sprinkle the sand from a height of 3–5 cm for even distribution.
For a denser effect, the application can be repeated twice.
Avoid overly thick gel — it may “sink” the sand particles.
Use a thin brush or stencil for clean and precise design edges.
