Nail Extensions Using Upper Forms: Step-by-Step Guide

Upper forms (dual forms) are a modern nail extension technique that allows you to create a strong, perfectly shaped nail with minimal filing. This method is suitable for both beginners and experienced nail technicians.

Required Materials and Tools

  • Upper (dual) nail forms in the appropriate sizes
  • Base gel
  • Builder gel or polygel
  • Dehydrator and primer (if needed)
  • Nail brush and Slip Solution (for polygel)
  • UV/LED curing lamp
  • Nail files and buffer
  • Top coat

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Nail Preparation

  • Sanitize your hands and the client's hands.
  • Gently push back and prepare the cuticles.
  • Lightly buff the natural nail surface to improve adhesion.
  • Remove dust, cleanse the nail, and apply a dehydrator if necessary.
  • Apply a base coat and cure it in the lamp.

2. Preparing the Upper Forms

  • Select the correct size for each nail. The form should be slightly wider than the natural nail.
  • If necessary, lightly buff the inside of the form to improve adhesion.
  • If the natural nail is wider than the largest form, carefully warm the form with a lighter to make it slightly more flexible before fitting.

3. Applying the Product

  • Place a small amount of builder gel or polygel inside the upper form.
  • Using a brush moistened with Slip Solution, evenly distribute the product.
  • Create the desired length and architecture, including the apex and free edge.

4. Attaching the Form

  • Carefully place the upper form onto the nail, applying even pressure so the product spreads evenly without overflowing.
  • Remove any excess product around the cuticle or sidewalls using an orange wood stick or a brush.
  • Cure in the lamp:
    • UV Lamp: 2 minutes
    • LED Lamp: 60 seconds

5. Removing the Form

  • Once fully cured, gently remove the upper form.
  • It should release easily from the cured material.
  • If necessary, refine the shape with a nail file.

6. Finishing

  • Smooth the surface with a buffer if needed.
  • Apply a top coat and cure.
  • Add nail art or decorative elements if desired.
  • Finish by applying cuticle oil.

Advantages of Using Upper Forms

  • Minimal filing, saving both time and effort.
  • Easy application, even for beginners.
  • Beautiful nail architecture with minimal shaping.
  • Reduced stress on the natural nail.
  • Fast, efficient nail extensions with professional-looking results.

This technique has become one of the most popular methods for creating durable, elegant nail extensions quickly and with minimal manual filing.
